A Alb\u00e2nia continua a ser um destino pouco tur\u00edstico da Europa, mas motivos n\u00e3o faltam para explorar o pa\u00eds. A Mariana deixa alguns, acompanhados de dicas, a seguir.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Alb\u00e2nia \u00e9 um pa\u00eds barato, as pessoas s\u00e3o muito simp\u00e1ticas, as paisagens v\u00e3o desde as montanhas \u00e0s praias de \u00e1gua cristalina, conta com uma hist\u00f3ria bem marcante e cidades que parecem sa\u00eddas de um filme. Motivos para visitar o pa\u00eds n\u00e3o faltam. No entanto, h\u00e1 que relembrar que a Alb\u00e2nia somente \u00e9 um pa\u00eds \u201clivre\u201d desde os anos 90 e que, por esse motivo, tem algumas caracter\u00edsticas particulares que podem n\u00e3o coincidir com a t\u00edpica imagem que temos dos pa\u00edses europeus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Carro ou autocarro s\u00e3o as melhores formas de viajar pelo pa\u00eds<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Dada a falta de uma boa rede de transportes p\u00fablicos, o carro \u00e9, muitas das vezes, o meio de transporte mais pr\u00e1tico e recomendado. Ali\u00e1s, foi esta a op\u00e7\u00e3o que acabei por escolher devido \u00e0 flexibilidade que me permitiu ter para visitar a Alb\u00e2nia. Mesmo assim, \u00e9 tamb\u00e9m poss\u00edvel escolher viajar de transportes p\u00fablicos. Estes resumem-se essencialmente aos autocarros e a pequenos furg\u00f5es, j\u00e1 que a rede de comboios deixa (muito) a desejar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. \u00c9 preciso ser um condutor experiente e adotar uma condu\u00e7\u00e3o cuidadosa<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Regra geral, as estradas na Alb\u00e2nia est\u00e3o em boas condi\u00e7\u00f5es. Na minha viagem, a \u00fanica exce\u00e7\u00e3o que encontrei foi um tro\u00e7o da estrada que liga Shkod\u00ebr a Komani. No entanto, os albaneses s\u00e3o conhecidos pela sua condu\u00e7\u00e3o, digamos, meio fren\u00e9tica. Existe muita impaci\u00eancia no tr\u00e2nsito, buzinadelas por tudo e por nada. Conduzir na Alb\u00e2nia \u00e9, portanto, uma verdadeira aventura!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importa tamb\u00e9m referir que em alguns casos devemos conduzir de forma especialmente cuidadosa. N\u00e3o s\u00e3o poucas as vezes em que encontramos pe\u00f5es em plena autoestrada ou via r\u00e1pida, ou condutores de mota sem capacete na estrada. Deste modo, e para evitar acidentes graves, recomendo aten\u00e7\u00e3o redobrada nos momentos de condu\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. O dinheiro (ainda) \u00e9 rei<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Quando planeava a minha viagem \u00e0 Alb\u00e2nia, li em v\u00e1rios blogues que a maioria dos restaurantes (e muitas vezes at\u00e9 hot\u00e9is) n\u00e3o aceitam pagamentos com cart\u00e3o. Apesar de isto ter-se revelado menos verdade do que estava \u00e0 espera, s\u00e3o muitos os locais com um aviso \u00e0 entrada de \u201ccash only\u201d. Deste modo, sugiro vivamente que andem sempre com algum dinheiro convosco, pois facilmente se encontrar\u00e3o numa situa\u00e7\u00e3o em que n\u00e3o podem usar cart\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ADVERTISING<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Euros s\u00e3o aceites, mas cuidado com a taxa de c\u00e2mbio<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Dada a proximidade da Alb\u00e2nia com pa\u00edses da Zona Euro, a moeda euro \u00e9 amplamente aceite na Alb\u00e2nia. No entanto, nesses casos \u00e9 habitual indicarem-vos a taxa de c\u00e2mbio. E a verdade \u00e9 que raramente compensa pagar em euros. Por isso, confirmem sempre qual a taxa de c\u00e2mbio naquele momento para garantir que n\u00e3o saem a perder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Os pre\u00e7os s\u00e3o baixos<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Para um turista que venha de outros pa\u00edses europeus \u00e9 f\u00e1cil considerar a Alb\u00e2nia um pa\u00eds barato, especialmente no que diz respeito a alojamentos e refei\u00e7\u00f5es. Facilmente, uma refei\u00e7\u00e3o num restaurante m\u00e9dio custa 6\u20ac por pessoa e uma noite num quarto com WC privativo cerca de 15\u20ac por pessoa. Claro que existem valores mais altos (e tamb\u00e9m baixos), dependendo sempre da experi\u00eancia que procuramos. No entanto, \u00e9 ineg\u00e1vel que a Alb\u00e2nia \u00e9 um dos pa\u00edses mais baratos na Europa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. \u00c9 um pa\u00eds seguro<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Li em alguns sites que nem sempre era seguro viajar na Alb\u00e2nia. Contudo, a minha experi\u00eancia foi bastante positiva. Nunca me senti insegura (nem \u00e0 noite) e andei frequentemente com a m\u00e1quina fotogr\u00e1fica e o telem\u00f3vel vis\u00edveis. No entanto, \u00e9 de refor\u00e7ar que tive, como em todas as viagens que fa\u00e7o, os cuidados habituais. De qualquer forma, h\u00e1 duas zonas que efetivamente recomendam n\u00e3o visitar na Alb\u00e2nia (zona junto \u00e0 fronteira com o Kosovo e Lazarat). Todavia, n\u00e3o tenho qualquer experi\u00eancia nestes dois locais, pelo que alerto meramente para algumas dicas que vi online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. A comunica\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 f\u00e1cil<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A l\u00edngua na Alb\u00e2nia \u00e9 o alban\u00eas, uma l\u00edngua que n\u00e3o se compara com mais nenhuma. Assim, para al\u00e9m das express\u00f5es b\u00e1sicas, n\u00e3o ser\u00e1 f\u00e1cil tentar falar alban\u00eas. Mas tal n\u00e3o \u00e9 problema, pois a popula\u00e7\u00e3o expressa-se, regra geral, muito bem em ingl\u00eas! E, em alguns casos at\u00e9, conseguem encontrar albaneses que falam italiano, j\u00e1 que o pa\u00eds chegou a estar ocupado por It\u00e1lia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Escolham bem o aeroporto<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

O \u00fanico aeroporto na Alb\u00e2nia com boas liga\u00e7\u00f5es internacionais est\u00e1 localizado em Tirana, a capital do pa\u00eds. Este \u00e9 um excelente ponto de partida para quem pretende fazer uma road trip<\/em> pelo pa\u00eds j\u00e1 que fica localizado relativamente a meio. No entanto, e se apenas pretendem visitar a zona das praias (o que n\u00e3o recomendo, pois o pa\u00eds \u00e9 muito mais do que as suas praias) ou a zona sul, pode fazer sentido voar at\u00e9 Corfu, na Gr\u00e9cia, e da\u00ed apanhar um ferry at\u00e9 Sarand\u00eb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Existem v\u00e1rias religi\u00f5es no pa\u00eds<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ainda que a maioria dos habitantes na Alb\u00e2nia sejam mu\u00e7ulmanos, \u00e9 habitual encontrarmos pessoas de v\u00e1rias religi\u00f5es. Ali\u00e1s, tal \u00e9 vis\u00edvel na quantidade de igrejas ortodoxas e cat\u00f3licas que vamos encontrando, a par das mesquitas existentes nas cidades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Preparem-se para as centenas de bunkers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

O que n\u00e3o falta espalhado pela Alb\u00e2nia s\u00e3o bunkers. Sim, leram bem! A Alb\u00e2nia esteve sob um regime ditatorial em que o ditador Enver Hoxha vivia obcecado que iria ser v\u00edtima de um ataque nuclear. Desta forma, mandou construir mais de 100 mil bunkers por todo o pa\u00eds. A verdade \u00e9 que o t\u00e3o temido ataque nuclear nunca chegou a acontecer e, agora, os bunkers est\u00e3o ao abandono. S\u00e3o exce\u00e7\u00f5es dois dos maiores bunkers do regime, constru\u00eddos em Tirana, podendo-se visitar o museu que existe no seu interior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even a week after I returned from Albania<\/a>, in my mind I was still in the Accursed Mountains, a fitting name for the dramatic limestone karst and thick beech forests that stood before me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With scenes resembling the Peruvian Andes, it was hard to believe it was just a three-hour flight  away from home in the UK. These untamed landscapes have few signs of civilisation (not counting the increasing number of hikers on the Valbona Pass).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A detox to modern life, the valleys are sporadically dotted with kullas<\/em> (north Albanian farmhouses), which are hundreds of years old, quite possibly the same ones Victorian travel<\/a> writer Edith Durham passed by. In her 1909 travelogue, High Albania<\/em>, she noted how \u201ctime stood still\u201d in Theth and the surrounding villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One could argue it hasn\u2019t moved on much since, with a few exceptions: you can take a Land Rover Defender taxi to your guest house rather than a mule; there are a handful of hotels after a post-millennium tourism boom, and, thankfully, the isolation tower is just a museum these days as blood feuds are a rarity. There is, of course, hot water and wifi now, too (unless a storm knocks it off), so you\u2019re not totally off-grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The farms there have passed down through the generations and are tended in traditional ways; the family I stayed with still leads their cattle up to high summer pastures in Theth and back down to the foothills in Shkod\u00ebr to escape the harsh winters. Many like them are now opening their ancestors\u2019 homes to hikers, offering a priceless cultural exchange, farm-to-table home-cooked food, and all-consuming bucolic beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even in 2024, Theth and Valbona are relatively cut off from the outside world; they only recently had some of their roads tarmacked and it\u2019s quicker to hike the pass between the two than drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The natural world remains even more unchanged. Large sections of the forests are so untouchable they\u2019re considered primeval, particularly near the border with Kosovo, where there are trees thought to be more than 350 years old. As I clambered up to the saddle of the Valbona Pass (1,800m above sea level) to a chorus of cuckoos, I gazed down at the prismatic Valbona River. A mere thread vein through the floodplain in June<\/a>, it\u2019s one of Europe<\/a>\u2019s cleanest rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Albania\u2019s ultimate claim to being Europe\u2019s final wild frontier is the mighty Vjosa, the continent\u2019s last completely untouched river outside of Russia. Though part of it crosses Greece<\/a>, the majority slices through Albania, where it became the first river to be designated a national park in 2023 to protect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventy-five per cent of Albania is made up of these larger-than-life landscapes, and while can be touted as the affordable fly-and-flop destination, beach bums are missing out by making a beeline for the seaside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, touch down in Tirana and head north. Within minutes of leaving the airport, you\u2019re driving through pastures synonymous with a Greek island<\/a>: fruit orchards, shepherds herding their sheep, and hazy mountains along the skyline. Stop to admire the views with a spot of lunch at Mrizi i Zanave, an award-winning agritourism dining establishment that locals flock to at the weekends. Take a free tour of their wine and cheese stores and learn how they produce their food on site before tucking in. There\u2019s no menu; you will be served whatever is in season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continue for another two to three hours to Shkod\u00ebr, the namesake of southern Europe\u2019s largest lake, which teeters on the border with Montenegro. Known as Albania\u2019s cycling city, Shkod\u00ebr is a perfect base for exploring the lake and the Albanian Alps. It\u2019s not far from there that on a 30C June afternoon, I drifted into a nature reserve surrounded by water lilies on a stand-up paddleboard and sank my feet into the putty-like lake floor during a swim. Here, the Dalmatian pelican squawked from behind the reeds as our guide Drini explained how conservation work has brought them back from the brink of extinction. The conversation changed pace when we tittered at the local name for carp fish (\u201ckrap\u201d). He got us back with English words that translate to something rude in Albanian \u2013 I will leave you to discover those for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A little later, I continued bathing in the refreshing water at Lake Shkodra resort where, after a sunset dip spent staring across at Montenegro<\/a> on the far side, I retreated to my bell tent and drifted off to the mating calls of Albanian water frogs and later into the night, golden jackals, which I mistook for children guffawing in the fields past their bedtime, stirred me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lake\u2019s beauty has long attracted German tourists but much of western Europe is still unaware of North Albania\u2019s hidden beauty. To wake up and gaze out at the Accursed Mountains on one side and the Montenegrin border on the other was magic. Slow travel is the best approach here. By hiking, biking and paddling through it, you get the full story. As tourism increases, I only hope Albania remains wild at heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
